Larnaka in Top 10 for Cycling
Larnaka’s status as a top cycling destination has been confirmed with its inclusion in the European Mobility Week Award 2013 shortlist of the top ten European cities for cycling.
The town made the shortlist following its efforts to promote cycling as a green and healthy mode of travel during European Mobility Week, which took place in September. The nomination recognises these efforts and out of 1,931 cities, those deemed “to have performed outstandingly well” are selected. Larnaka is shortlisted alongside cities such as Budapest, Sofia and Turku, with the winner announced in March.
It is no secret that Larnaka is a favourite destination for cyclists due to its excellent weather conditions, lack of strong headwinds and varied terrain and scenery. The region also hosts legs of major cycling tournaments such as the Sunshine Cup and the Volkswagen Tour where professionals and amateurs alike enjoy cycling to a picturesque Larnaka backdrop. This coming March, the Sunshine Cup will include Voroklini and its hilly terrain as its second stop. The race will be cross-country and will take place a week after the first stop, which is a time-trial race that passes through Lefkara and finishes at Skarinou – all Larnaka district villages.
