Celebrating Larnaka Traditions
Cyprus is well-known for its delicious culinary traditions, and its local folkarts that all endure to this day, mainly thanks to their continued practise in rural villages. Larnaka celebrates these customs each year with the Annual Festival of Tradition & Culture, held this year in the mountainous village of Ora on October 1.
Organised by The Ladies Association of Rural Larnaka, the event is a fantastic introduction to the region’s authentic, locally handmade traditional gastronomy and crafts - from diary products, pastries, handmade pasta, and honey, to skilfully created homewares.
In order to showcase the many traditional villages where women continue to remain the heart of tradition, the festival takes place at a different village each year, with pretty Ora taking the spotlight this year (past festivals have taken place at Kalavassos, Kornos and Maroni, amongst others).
Admission to the event is free, and the LTB will provide free bus transfers to and from the event. Pick up is from Larnaka-Dekeleia Road hotels at 3.45pm, and from Foinikoudes bus stop at 4.15pm. Return bus from Ora leaves at 7.45pm. Reservations can be made on: (00357) 24657070 or by contacting: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Women’s Rural Association of Larnaka was founded in 2004 with an aim to support and promote entrepreneurial women in the rural areas of Larnaka through promotional and cultural events.
