‘Hope’ to Enhance Diving Tourism
Larnaka’s reputation as a diving destination will be boosted further with the welcome announcement that an artificial reef will be created soon, adding to the region’s underwater allure for both novice and professional divers.
The new reef will be created in Autumn 2019 when the aptly named ‘Elpida’ vessel (which means ‘hope’ in the Greek language) will be sunk off the coast of Voroklini (along Larnaka-Dekeleia Road).
The commercial boat hails from Greece and is 63 metres long. It will soon come into the possession of the Fisheries Department, who will make the appropriate preparations to create Larnaka’s new artificial reef - an exciting development that the LTB has worked hard to secure.
Chairman of the LTB, Mr Dinos Lefkaritis, expressed his delight that the board’s vision to make Larnaka region an internationally recognised diving destination is becoming a reality with the reef’s creation.
Divers from all over the world already flock to the region for the internationally renowned Zenobia wreck dive, which ranks among the top 10 best wreck dives globally. The addition of an artificial reef – which enriches waters by quickly increasing marine life – will surely delight both old and new fans of Larnaka diving.
In addition to MV Elpida, another boat will be added in the new reef, named LEF1 and is 16 metres long. This boat will be used for snorkelling purposes and is a sponsorhip of Lefkaritis Bros Ltd.
