Meet You at the Market!
The nostalgic atmosphere of an open-air market is making a resurgence in Larnaka Region with the creation of two, new markets that artfully blend local tradition with contemporary characteristics.
The first market to open is that of the Women’s Association of Rural Larnaka, which started operating at its premises in Agios Theodoros village at the beginning of March.
With its location in mountainous Larnaka, the market offers the opportunity for the association’s members and their rural communities to showcase their delicacies in a permanent location, complementing the member’s presence at seasonal markets around the island throughout the year.
Visitors will find an alluring array of fresh, local produce and handmade products, from dairy and authentic baked goods, to conserves and sweets.
The market operates every Sunday, from 9am – 2pm with an emphasis on sustainability. As such, there is a ‘no plastic’ policy with visitors requested to bring their own containers and bags.
The new municipal market in Larnaka town centre will also be completed later this year (image 4), unveiling an impressive new retail destination in the heart of the city that will offer a mixture of local elements and modern services.
The large, two-storey structure is located on the site of the original ‘agora’, which once constituted an important and bustling part of everyday life in the town centre. After a spell as a parking lot, EU funding is now breathing new life into this historic landmark with a state-of-the-art project that will include stalls and artisan spaces, cafes and restaurants, a stage for events, a dedicated exhibition area, and ample parking.
Set among the eclectic array of shops of the town centre, and just metres away from the Finikoudes seafront, the market will add a new dimension to the Larnaka city experience.
So, it won’t be long till we can ‘meet you at the market’!
