Reef at the Ready!
The ‘Elpida’ and 'LEF1' vessels that will create Larnaka’s new artificial reefs have officially been sunk and will soon enrich marine life and diving options in Larnaka region.
The ‘Elpida’ – a 63-metre long commercial vessel from Greece - was sunk off the coast of Voroklini on December 7 during a grand ceremony held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nicos Anastasiades.
Officials and spectators were taken to the site by boats where they watched the Elpida lowered to a depth of 30 metres, ready to welcome its new underwater residents. Watch video here.
President of the LTB, Mr Dinos Lefkaritis, spoke of the significant and long-awaited development of Larnaka’s new artificial reef and how it will greatly contribute to marine biodiversity and the recovery of fish numbers, as well as boosting tourism and the local economy.
He also spoke of the second vessel – the LEF1 sponsored by Lefkaritis Bros Ltd – that was sunk on December 10, emphasizing that at a shallower depth of 13 metres it will be the island’s first and only dedicated snorkelling wreck. Watch video here.
Coordinated by the LTB and the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, the project was made possible thanks to co-financing from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (2014-2020), as well as the generous support and sponsorship of various local authorities and Larnaka region stakeholders.
It will not be long before marine life flourishes at the site and divers will be thrilled to enjoy additional wrecks alongside the world-renowned Zenobia.
