Athienou Lokoumi Sweet Included on the UNESCO National Intangible Cultural Heritage List
The traditional Cypriot wedding favour known as 'Lokoumi' - specifically made in Athienou - has been registered on the UNESCO National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The sweet is a biscuit made with semolina and butter; filled with almonds, and dusted generously with powdered icing sugar. It is similar to Christmas cookies known as 'kourabiedhes' that are popular during the festive season.
Athineou has a long and rich history of wheat growing, flour milling and baked products, including Athienou Bread which is also an UNESCO listed product.
