- Green Monday, Larnaka Region
Green Monday is a public holiday that marks the end of the carnival period and the start of lent. It is celebrated outdoors in the fields, parks and camp sites with a Lenton picnic with only fasting food eaten, including seafood that does not 'bleed', such as cuttlefish and octopus, and a special, traditional bread and 'halvas' semolina dessert. Locals enjoy playing games outdoors, such as tug-of-war and sack races, and it is also customary to fly kites (but not permitted in certain areas for safety reasons).
Most communities of Larnaka hold their own official event with games, entertainment and complimentary snacks and/or drinks, which varies from community to community. Participants should bring their own picnic too. Where time is not stated, it is typically from 11am - 4pm.
