Cyprus Art Retreat: A Synergy of Community, Nature & Art

Mountainous Agioi Vavatsinias – one of the Rural Larnaka Honey Villages and an EDEN village – has been given a colourful injection of art since the opening of Cyprus Art Retreat – Fire Gallery in 2023.
The initiative – which offers one-day workshops, longer retreat stays and art residencies - was founded by burl wood carver Tim Price and Francis Mupini; a displaced artist and photographer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Having met through the island’s art scene, the pair shared a vision to combine an art gallery and creative experiences with nature and traditional, local food and activities.
After touring the mountainous areas of Larnaka region, the perfect environment was found in Agioi Vavatsinias and very soon Cyprus Art Retreat became an active part of the small community, creating synergies with other local businesses and producers, including Chloe’s Kitchen (where workshop participants enjoy meals made with fresh, local produce); a boutique winery in the region for retreat guest visits, and a collaboration with a local honey producer to offer bee and insect house workshops. A nature trail for hiking and running has also been created in cooperation with the Community Council.
This community ethos extends to the respect of the local environment and authenticity of the area, and holidays at Cyprus Art Retreat are also certified as sustainable by Responsible Travel website.
