Enjoy Cherished Easter Traditions in Larnaka

Easter in Cyprus is a cherished and important time of year with special customs that visitors can observe and enjoy for a truly authentic experience.
During Holy Week there are various church services that are open to all, as well as baking and food that is unique to certain days.
Good Friday: Christ's epitaphios (shrine representing Christ’s tomb) is decorated with fresh flowers and its procession takes place during the evening service.
Holy Saturday: an effigy of Judas is burnt on a bonfire before Christ’s resurrection is celebrated at midnight and the fast is broken with traditional 'magiritsa' (lamb offal soup) after church.
Easter Sunday: families gather for the traditional meal of spit-roasted lamb and crack red-dyed eggs in a game that symbolises the cracking of Christ’s tomb.
Easter baking includes ‘flaounes’ (cheese, sultana and mint pies made with a special cheese); ‘tsoureki’ (brioche-like bread), and ‘koulouria’ (sesame seed biscuits) - all of which can be bought at the bakeries and are a 'must try'!
Easter Monday – April 13, 2026
The old Cypriot tradition of communal Easter Monday games and entertainment has been preserved at the villages and rural communities and is a way of celebrating after the more solemn days of the season.
Events are held across Larnaka region’s villages, and whilst they vary from community-to-community, they typically include playfully competitive games (such as sports matches, sack races, egg and spoon, tug-o-war, and the like), folkloric entertainment, and snacks and drinks.
And with free admission, all are welcome to join, making it a great way for visitors to discover the local Easter traditions.
Check the online event calendar nearer the date to see which communities will hold free, public events, including at Athienou, Kalavasos, Voroklini, Lefkara, Troulloi and Kelia.
