"The Best is Yet to Come": Interview - Dr Nakis Antoniou, President LCCI
As the presiding board member of LTB, Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) is one of the bodies whose activities complement those of the tourism board. The chamber’s new president, Dr Nakis Antoniou, tells us all about his outlook for the region during his term, which started in November 2023.
A clear vision and strategy are the foundation of Larnaka’s long-term development according to Dr Antoniou, who is looking to entice future generations to embrace their region: “We have set the development of Larnaka as our priority, for the sake of its residents, businesses and visitors as it is vital to ensure that our children – and their children - will inherit a place where they want to work and stay.”
Alongside making Larnaka a better place for its residents, creating an attractive tourist destination, and drawing in more investment also guide development and infrastructure improvement projects, which Dr Antoniou believes are facilitated via modern technology: “Something that both LCCI and LTB are doing is taking advantage of effective marketing and promotion strategies to attract tourists and investment to Larnaka, including the use of digital channels and new digital tools, which I think we will see more of during 2024”.
Whilst the focus of LCCI is primarily business and investment, Dr Antoniou recognises the part this plays for tourism and places emphasis on good relationships in promoting the region’s overall economic growth and prosperity. With former LCCI President, Mr Stavros Stavrou now holding the position of Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Dr Antoniou credits this for a seamless transition for LCCI to continue the work of its vision. Parallel to this, the synergies and excellent cooperation that LCCI enjoys with LTB and the local authorities of the region "all aid the development of Larnaka and the collective push for innovative projects to be implemented.”
In particular, Dr Antoniou cites the slew of new squares and upgrading projects both in the region’s coastal and rural areas, which he believes “have created a new image for our city”, but says that the best is yet to come! “It is an exciting time for Larnaka with many major investments planned, such the integrated marina and port project and the future prospects of the Larnaka-Dekeleia Road now that the oil refineries have vacated and the area is being prepared for development.”
Naturally, Dr Antoniou is also passionate about Larnaka from a personal perspective: “For me, Larnaka is a gastronomic capital! The food is excellent and I especially enjoy a hearty fish or meat meze in the traditional tavernas of the city and villages, accompanied by a local wine, of course!”
In terms of attractions, Dr Antoniou says he has many favourites, but finds that the panoramic sea views from Larnaka Medieval Castle (Fort) never fail to impress… as well as to remind him how even when a place progresses, it’s history and roots are always at its heart.
