Larnaka Honeybee Natural Trails
The nine Rural Larnaka Honey Villages in mountainous Larnaka region share a rich history of beekeeping and honey production and offer various bee and honey-themed activities, including nature trails.
Vavatsinia Honeybee Trail - 'The Humming of the Bees'
The first of the Larnaka Honeybee Nature Trails created was the Vavatsinia Honeybee Trail - ‘The Humming of the Bees’. The trail combines walking in the picturesque and tranquil surroundings of mountainous Vavatsinia village with an educational and healing experience centered around the therapeutic sound of the humming of bees; something that has been proven to have health and wellness benefits.
The 2.5km path has a difficulty rating of just 2 (suitable for all). It has bee-friendly plants signposted along the way, decorative beehives and bee ‘hotels’ that offer refuge for solitary bees. Hexagonal, wooden urban furniture has been installed to symbolize beehives, including a pavilion and benches, along with wooden loungers for a relaxing break. Walkers will discover plenty of interesting information on bees, such as facts about apitherapy and the way in which bees communicate with flowers, and can enjoy some time out at the different points and yoga spots to breathe in the fresh mountain air whilst listening to the gentle melodies of nature.
This particular nature trail is an adaptation of an existing path to give it a defined bee themed identity and was created with the contribution of LTB and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism (DMT) in cooperation with the Troodos Network and Vavatsinia Community Council.
Vavla Honeybee Trail
Vavla Honeybee Trail is the second trail; created with the contribution of LTB and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism (DMT) in cooperation with the Troodos Network and Vavla Community Council.
The trail has a difficulty rating of just 1, which means that it is ideal for all, including children, who will enjoy a walk in fresh air and greenery combined with an educational and fun experience!
The trail starts at Agios Georgios Church and culminates at the traditional well and water reservoir. In olden days, the women of the village would take this trail in groups to wash their clothes; a symbol of hard work and diligence, much like bees!
Like the Vavatsinia trail there are wooden loungers, benches and view points along the way, but the theme of this particular trail focuses on the various phases of a bee’s life; the different types of bees found in the hive community and the unique role of each.
All along the trail are various types of bee hotels, designed to provide shelter and sanctuary to solitary bees that do not belong to a hive.
At the end of the trail, walkers are rewarded with spectacular views of the valley.
