Authentic Touches Added to Larnaka’s Rural Villages
Part of the Larnaka Tourism Board Annual Action Plan is sponsoring initiatives that highlight, enhance and maintain the unique character of the region’s rural villages, with particular emphasis on their traditions.
Included in the 2024 Annual Action Plan were:
In Valvla a second Honeybee, themed nature trail was created, as part of the attractions of the 'Rural Larnaka Honey Villages'. Be sure to add the trail to your tour of the nine villages - the perfect, fresh-air winter outing!
Six Athienou bus stop shelters at key points in the municipality were given artistic touches by three local artists, basing their pretty designs on Athienou’s exclusive handmade lace that is included on the UNESCO National Intangible World Heritage List (Cyprus).
The popular series of photo benches at beauty spots across the region had a new addition with a charming swing chair in Choirokoitia that is also lit up at night. Why not see if you can find and photograph them all (and be sure to tag Larnaka Tourism Board!).
Mosaic Planters were placed around the villages of Kato Lefkara, Agios Theodoros and Choriokoitia. The planters were adorned with designs relating to each community - and the island - such as Neolithic depictions for Choriokoitia and Lefkaritiko hand-embroidered lace patterns for Kato Lefkara. In Lefkara charming benches and clay pots were also added, giving visitors a chance to stop and take in the village.
A traditional village farm with local animals that were important in everyday life in olden days is being created in Agios Theodoros and will open to visitors at the start of 2025.
Across the mountainous areas, a series of nine Myths and Legends narrated by villagers who grew up with the myths is being created. QR codes will be added at the points and landmarks relating to the stories.
The Annual Action Plan also included many more worthy projects, including beach cleaning and greening initiatives, promotion of authentic gastronomy, the support of sporting and traditional events, upgrading of parks and leisure facilities, digital and accessible attractions. And with its conclusion, we now look forward to the 2025 projects... stay tuned!
